Roy Spencer

Pte Roy Spencer was born on June 24th 1897. He enlisted in the Royal Newfoundland Regt at St. Johns Dec 30th 1914, and was assigned regimental # 859. He embarked St. Johns in "C" Company on "SS Dominion" Feb 2nd 1915 and disembarked Devonport Eng Feb 16th/15, thence to Edinburgh Castle arriving same day. Embarked Devonport, Aug 20th/15 with the Mediterrean Expeditionary Force on the "Megantic". Disembarked Alexandria, Egypt Aug 31/15 & entrained for Cairo same date for climatizing . Embarked Alexandria for Gallipoli Sept 13th/15, landed Sulva Bay Turkey night of Sept 19th-20th 1915. Admitted Hospital with dysentry Oct 13th. Invalided to England on "SS Dongola" Oct 16th and admitted Wandsworth Hospital, London, Eng Oct 27th . Fit for duty and granted furlough Jan 5th to 14th, 1916 . Embarked Southampton March 28/16, disembarked Rouen France Mar 30th, joined "E" Company battalion .

On July 1st 1916 received gunshot wound right forearm at Beaumont Hamel, admitted Hospital Rouen July 2nd or 3rd 1916 and invalided to England July 5th admitted Wandsworth Hospital London July 6th. Furloughed Oct 24th to Nov 3rd 1916. Embarked Southampton Feb 10th 1917 and disembarked Rouen France Feb 11th.

He joined the Battalion Feb 24th . Gunshot wound right shoulder, severe, April 14th 1917 at Arras France, and also left foot badly wounded, admitted Hospital France Apl 15/17, amputation of right arm and shoulder joint in General Hospital, Dannes Camiers, France May 6th. Removed from seriously ill May 23rd/17. Invalided to England May 29th/17 and admitted Wandsworth Hospital, London, May 30th .

On Feb 19th, 1918 artificial limb provided . Transferred to Hospital in Brighton, Eng., Feb 11th to June 21st, then to Roehampton Hospital, June 21st , bullet removed from between scapula and left rib April 25th 1918 . Furloughed August 24th 1918 and sent home August 25th, 1918 on "SS Corsican" to Montreal and thence to St. Johns arriving Sept 9th. Discharged medically unfit Sept 30th 1918 after 3 years 276 days in service .

Shortly after World War II broke out, Roy recruited the thirteenth naval draft from the South Coast of Newfoundland and brought them to St. Johns, went in charge of the men to Liverpool on the ship Baltrover which left St. Johns, went to Halifax and then to Liverpool , taking almost a month from the time it left St. Johns and returned home in November 1940 .
