Fortune Head Interpretation Center & Ecological Reserve
Fortune Head's past could play a key role in its future
The surroundings at Fortune Head have changed. In the beginning there was nothing but rocky cliffs and natural vegetation.
Then, in 1954, it became a manned Light Station to sound alerts for ocean-going craft during inclement weather conditions.
Next, through government downsizing and spending cutbacks, it was turned into an unmanned, automatic station.
However, in 1977 trace fossils were found in the area, an important geological discovery which led to world acclaim.
Lo and behold, Fortune Head is once again a manned station, although the equipment is still automated.
Why all the attention? Because it is destined to become the biggest tourist attraction in this area!
The cliffs are still there, the vegetation is still there and so are the fossils!
A modern Interpretation Centre has been constructed in the town of Fortune, to explain what Fortune Head is all about - through text, visual aids, etc.
The best is yet to come!
